Maine Coon Care Tips

In order for your Maine Coon to be healthy and please you for a long time, he needs proper care and daily care.

Maine Coon diet

The key to the beauty and longevity of Maine coons, like any other animals, is proper nutrition. The basis of the diet of this breed of cats can be both professional dry food and natural food, but it is preferable to choose mixed feeding.

Lean meat is recommended for maine coons from natural products: veal, chicken, turkey, rabbit. They can be offered to the pet in boiled or raw form, depending on the age. It is undesirable to introduce fish into the Maine coon diet, but some experts allow these cats to be fed with boiled sea fish of elite varieties (sea salmon, trout). Vegetables (except legumes and potatoes), porridge (with the exception of hercules), liver and other offal are very useful for your pet. From dairy products, preference should be given to cream with 10% fat content.

Maine Coon kittens eat natural baby curds well without additives (Theme, Agusha). It would also be nice to teach your pet to the yolk of a quail egg from an early age, which can be dissolved in a bowl with cream to begin with.

It is better to give preference to premium products from dry industrial feeds, such as Sanabelle, Monge, Hillis, because only they fully provide the Maine Coon organism with nutrients, vitamins and minerals. It's better to forget about canned food and cheap food like Whiskas, Kitekat, Friskis.

Vitamins

If you feed your pet mainly with natural products, then it is necessary to add vitamin complexes to the animal's diet. It is better to give preference to Kanina. If your cat eats exclusively dry food, then vitamins should be given carefully to exclude hypervitaminosis.

Maine Coon Fur Care

Maine Coons belong to the breed of semi-long-haired cats and are famous for their thick, silky, soft fur. But in order for your pet to always look well-groomed, it is necessary to comb it regularly, especially during the molting period. To care for the fur of the Maine Coon, you will need to purchase several combs:

  • a metal comb with rare teeth (preferably rotating) for pre-combing and straightening tangled hairs;
  • pukhoderku, which will help to remove dead hairs of the undercoat;
  • a massage metal comb with an antistatic coating, with which you will remove the fallen-out hair and give your cat's fur a beautiful well-groomed look.

Begin to comb the Maine Coon usually from the neck, moving to the back and then to the tail. After that, they move on to the stomach and paws. First, a comb with sparse teeth is used, then the excess wool is removed with a fluff and at the end the animal is combed with a massage comb. If tangles have formed on your cat's fur coat, you need to carefully cut them off with scissors.

To keep the pet's coat smooth and shiny, you need to bathe it periodically. Fortunately, these cats are not at all against water procedures and willingly allow themselves to be washed with special shampoos of such brands as, for example, Grummers's Goop, Jerob or House of Anju. It is recommended to do this no more than once every 2-3 months.

It is necessary to lather the cat from head to tail, trying not to let the foam get into the eyes and ears of the pet. Shampoo should be thoroughly washed off with warm water, otherwise the coat of the Maine Coon will be sticky and dull. After bathing, the cat should be wrapped in a clean terry towel and taken to a room where there are no drafts. In no case do not try to dry your pet with a hairdryer!

Care for the ears, eyes and claws of the Maine Coon

Healthy ears of Maine Coons should be clean, without dirty plaque. It is necessary to clean the animal's auricle from natural secretions only with cotton swabs soaked in a special liquid or in vaseline oil. Outside, your pet's ears should not have any combs, crusts and bald patches. If an unpleasant smell is felt from the ears of the Maine coon, and you notice that the cat often scratches them, this may be a sign of a skin tick. It is necessary to take the animal to the veterinarian for examination.

The eyes of Maine Coons are usually clean, clear and expressive, but sometimes secretions can accumulate on the inner corners, crusts form. They are easy to remove with a cotton swab or a swab dipped in tea leaves or just in warm boiled water. The same can be done with crusts and other impurities formed in the corners of your cat's nostrils.

Also monitor the condition of your pet's oral cavity. With age, Maine Coons can form a stone on their teeth, which leads to gum inflammation and even tooth loss. To prevent the formation of tartar, it is good to use special treats and dry food sold in any veterinary pharmacy.
